Program

Prepare to surpass your expectations! Located in the beautiful Comox Valley and now celebrating it's 43rd year, CYMC has an exciting program designed for aspiring young musicians ages 13-22, who play string, woodwind, brass, or percussion instruments. Working daily with our faculty you will be a part of private lessons, chamber music coaching and orchestra or wind ensemble rehearsals. You will grow by leaps and bounds during this intensive, two week camp.

CYMC Festival Orchestra

All string students and selected wind, brass and percussion students will rehearse alongside faculty members in the CYMC Festival Orchestra with performances taking place at the end of each week. The second week culminates with our exciting gala performance led by John van Deursen, this year featuring selected movements from Dvorak Symphony No. 8, winners of the concerto competition, and other exciting works.

CYMC Wind Ensemble

Registration permitting, selected wind, brass and percussion students will rehearse in the CYMC Wind Ensemble with performances at the end of each week. Led by John van Deursen, the Wind Ensemble will perform some of the great music from the wind band repertoire, featuring this year the Suite in Eb by Gustav Holst, Ticheli's Cajun Folk Songs, and other great music!

Concerto Competition

The concerto competition is open to all instrumentalists. Winners will perform at the end of week two with either the Festival Orchestra or the Wind Ensemble.

All students are encouraged to take part in the Concerto Competition, but a certain level of preparation before arriving at the CYMC is required. Those who wish to take part in the competition should consult their current private instructor to determine if they are ready, and to determine what repertoire is suitable for the student. If you do not have a private instructor and are interested in taking part in the competition, please contact the CYMC for more information. All efforts will be made to have the orchestral or wind band accompaniment for your piece available during the summer but there is no guarantee. Early notification to CYMC of your repertoire is important. Students should also send the piano accompaniment for their concerto piece to the CYMC once their attendance is confirmed.

Those interested please fill out the appropriate information on the registration form. The CYMC reserves the right to organize the concerto winner(s) with the appropriate ensemble and that performance with the orchestra is not guaranteed for all winners."

CYMC Faculty

Our faculty are professional educators, solo artists, and conductors coming from the Vancouver Symphony, Victoria Symphony, University of British Columbia and other high-level organizations. Instruction is given at the appropriate level for all students in a positive, nurturing atmosphere.

There is no better way to learn than in a challenging but supportive atmosphere. Students who attend CYMC come away with a completely new outlook on their own abilities, while many former CYMC students have gone on to professional music careers.

CYMC Faculty Concerts

All students attend our weekly faculty concerts which have become a cornerstone of the busy summer season for both CYMC students and local classical music lovers alike.

Master Classes & Optional Private Lessons

CYMC faculty members present master classes every weekday over the course of the two week Festival, and students may elect to take private lessons. There is an extra charge for lessons, and CYMC will assist students in organizing lesson times with faculty members.
