Musical Theatre Application

The CYMC Musical Theatre Artistic Team is excited to Present:

The Program runs from
June 28th - July 20th, 2025

Important Information about our 2025 program

Please note that Hadestown Teen Edition is limited to performers who are 19 years of age and younger.

This year, we are adjusting the registration process to an application to register for a number of reasons.

In recent years, registering for CYMC Musical Theatre has become a race to see who can complete the online registration steps fastest when registration opens. We believe there is a better way to determine who ends up in the program when the demand is high.

With each season there are different requirements in order to make the show possible. We would like to use the registration process each year to help ensure the cast will be able to meet the specific demands of each show.

The needs for this year – Hadestown Teen Edition – include specific ranges and abilities from singers, dancers, character actors, and potentially musicians, in addition to a balance that will work for the show.

So... What Now?

CYMC musical theatre will be Open for Applications to Register
Deadline February 15, 2025

To apply, please read the following carefully, fill out the application form below, and submit a video that includes singing, acting, and dancing according to the requirements below:

Singing

Please sing Oh Canada a capella. You may give yourself a starting note, but please do not wear earbuds or headphones, as we would like the singing to be without any kind of accompaniment, even if it’s just in your ears!

Send your comfortable range using C4 for Middle C. Comfortable range would be up to and including the highest and lowest notes you could sing easily with
good tone for an extended period of time. If you are unsure of this, please use a range finder such as this one:

Vocal Range Test - Free Online Vocal Range Finder
Examples of typical ranges are below (but not limited to these notes).

Please choose a key that is in your comfortable range. If you are able to show examples of the following skills, please include in your O Canada example: head voice, chest voice, mixed voice, falsetto, belt, mixed belt.

  • Bass: E2–E4
  • Baritone: G2–G4
  • Tenor: C3–C5
  • Alto: F3–F5
  • Mezzo-soprano: A3–A5
  • Soprano: C4–C6

Acting

Please choose two of the following:
  1. I am no bird; and no net ensnares me:
I am a free human being with an independent will.
  2. You're not the first to go through this, you know. You think I don't know how this feels?
  3. You think it’s easy, don’t you? To stand there and pretend like you’ve got it all figured out while the rest of us are drowning.
  4. Oh, sure. I’ll just save the world and make it back in time for dinner. Do you want fries with that?
  5. Listen, I can explain—well, actually, I can’t explain, but if I could explain, it’d be a really good explanation.
  6. I thought I was fine. That I didn’t need anyone. And then you walked in, and suddenly, nothing made sense anymore.
  7. If you don’t trust me now, we’re not going to make it. Please... just this once, believe me.
  8. I don’t give orders to be questioned—I give them to be followed. If you can’t handle that, step aside for someone who can.
Once you have chosen 2:
  • Make specific choices as a character saying these words.
  • Aim for sounding like someone actually talking to another person in a specific circumstance. Make strong choices.
  • Memorize them.
  • Perform the two separately – with a clear pause between.

DANCING –
for experienced dancers only:

1. Please demonstrate Jazz Technique by showcasing:
  • Jumps
  • Turns
  • Kicks
  • Special Tricks or Tumbling
2. Film yourself in a 30-45 second clip of you improvising contemporary style movement - you can use a song from Hadestown or something of your choosing.

What Happens Next?

The artistic team will review all the applications thoroughly, and once that is done they will begin inviting participants to register for 2025. We are hoping to notify everyone starting in March, letting you know if you can register or if you are on the waitlist.

For those invited to register, an email will be sent to you with details about the program and a request to pay the $1000.00 program registration fee.
